Reserve ahead if you want a table at sunset, because everyone else has the same idea. For an actual sit-down meal with locals rather than tourists, head to the tavernas of Psiri immediately north. Consistently good, noticeably cheaper.

The square itself is anchored by the restored 18th-century Tzistarakis Mosque — a ceramics museum now — and the ancient ruins of the Library of Hadrian, built in 132 AD. The Ancient Agora sits immediately to the west, the civic centre of ancient Athens where Socrates debated philosophy and democracy got its administrative legs. Ten minutes northwest, the Kerameikos archaeological site is Athens’s most undervisited major attraction: the ancient Athenian cemetery and pottery district, quiet and beautifully maintained. Go on a weekday morning and you might have it nearly to yourself.
Shopping and Getting the Most from Monastiraki
Leather goods are worth your attention here. Several workshops along Pandrossou Street still make sandals, bags, and belts by hand — you can watch them work while you wait. Olive wood products, hand-painted ceramics, and locally produced honey and olive oil are the reliable gift options. For contemporary Greek design, the small galleries in Psiri carry work by local designers and jewellers you genuinely won’t find in international chains. Sunday morning hits hardest for flea market intensity; weekday afternoons are quieter if you want to browse without being jostled.
