The Athens live music scene runs far deeper than the bouzouki shows aimed at tourists. Rebetiko — Greece’s own strain of urban blues, born in the port cities of the early 20th century — gets performed properly in clubs around Monastiraki and Psiri, mostly Thursday through Sunday. It starts late, usually around midnight, and goes until 3 or 4am. The atmosphere is genuinely unlike anything else. Worth staying up for.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival runs June through September and stages world-class performances at the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus, right below the Acropolis — classical music, opera, theatre, and dance in a 5,000-seat Roman amphitheatre. Clubs and Late-Night Athens
Gazi, built around the converted gasworks that now house the Technopolis cultural centre, is where Athens clubs. The streets around Kerameikos metro station kick into gear from midnight onwards — gay-friendly bars, larger clubs, smaller music venues covering Greek pop to electronic. Peak hours run from 1am to 4am. If you’re heading there, accept that it’s going to be a late one. Kolonaki, the upscale neighbourhood climbing toward Lycabettus Hill, runs on a different frequency entirely: cocktail lounges and wine bars, more conversation than dancing, and a scene that winds down at a civilised hour.
